Licensed Nurse Practitioners – Elimination of Prescriptive (Rx) Authority License

Published on Jan 29, 2020

The Committee of the Joint Boards of Nursing and Medicine promulgated regulation changes that resulted in the elimination of the requirement for nurse practitioners to obtain/maintain a separate prescriptive (Rx) authority license (#0017). These changes go into effect on March 4, 2020 resulting in a single nurse practitioner license (#0024) with clearly identified specialization(s) and authorizations granted by the Joint Boards, reflected on the license. Detailed license information will be viewable through License Lookup which serves as Primary Source Verification.

Additionally, nurse practitioners with prescriptive (Rx) authority will not be required to renew their prescriptive authority license (#0017) after March 4th. However, nurse practitioners with prescriptive (Rx) authority are still required to comply with the continuing competency requirements and other applicable laws or regulations for prescribers. There will be a $35 application/fee required to add prescriptive (Rx) authority to an existing nurse practitioner license and information will be posted after March 4th via Board of Nursing Nurse Practitioner Forms. Regulation changes will be posted in the Virginia Register after 2/4/2020.
