Effective January 1, 2017, the Virginia Board of Nursing will incorporate both state and federal criminal background checks as part of the application process for MASSAGE THERAPIST. This requirement applies to applicants by initial application, endorsement and reinstatement. Opioid Addiction Crisis Declared a Public Health Emergency in Virginia

On November 21, 2016 Governor McAuliffe issued a News Release stating that State Health Commissioner Marissa Levine has declared Virginia’s opioid abuse crisis a Public Health Emergency in the Commonwealth.

VaAware.com offers resources for combating RX drug and heroin abuse

vaaware.comPrescription drug and heroin abuse throughout the Commonwealth has reached epidemic proportions, with annual drug overdose deaths outnumbering deaths caused by car accidents.

In response to this crisis of addiction, Governor Terry McAuliffe’s Task Force on Rx Drug and Heroin Abuse in Virginia recommended that state agencies create a comprehensive website. Here is VaAware.com, an online resource developed as an informational tool for all citizens of Virginia.

The site features specific pages for parents, educators, licensed practitioners, law enforcement officers and drug dependents, and offers best practices for recognizing, preventing, diagnosing, treating, and recovering from opioid/heroin abuse.


Growing number of Zika virus cases reported in Virginia

Zika. www.ZikaVA.orgPrimarily a mosquito borne disease, the Zika virus is most impactful in warmer seasons when illness can be transmitted by insects carrying the virus from one person to another.  In fact, 15 cases have been reported in the Commonwealth as of May 12, 2016.  Maintaining a keen awareness for the transmission and treatment of Zika virus infection is an imperative for healthcare practitioners.  The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) offers a variety of related information and tools on its website.
