Virginia Prescription Monitoring Program

What Is The PMP?

The Virginia Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) is an application that generates reports showing the recent applicable prescribing history for any individual in the Commonwealth. The PMP is primarily used by prescribers (doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dentists, and other clinicians) and pharmacists to make well informed prescribing and dispensing decisions. When viewing the PMP report, clinicians look at the types of drugs recently dispensed to their patients as well as the strength, frequency and duration of the medications dispensed. If the combined doses appear unusually high, or the frequency of the prescriptions put the individual at risk for an overdose, the clinicians will consider these factors, among others, when prescribing or dispensing.

Recently, the PMP has experienced tremendous growth resulting from the ability of the Virginia PMP to integrate its NarxCare platform within the electronic health record (EHR) or pharmacy management system (PMS) of existing users. This allows prescribers and pharmacists to access PMP data without having to log into the PMP AWARxE platform. Prescribers can view the PMP reports as a separate, integrated component of their existing EHR. This streamlined access to the Virginia PMP has resulted in exponential growth and utilization of the Virginia PMP.
