I can verify current certification as a Nurse Practitioner or Nurse-Midwife

I finished a grad-level course in pharmacology or pharmacotherapeutics as part of my Nurse Practitioner/Nurse-Midwife education in the past five years

I completed at least 1000 hours of practice in each of the last two years, and 15 hours of continuing education in each of the last two years.

I completed 30 hours of education in pharmacology or pharmacotherapeutics within the last five years (more details in Application Instructions).

I do not meet any of these qualifications

You will need to submit an application for a Nurse Practitioner license in order to apply for Authorization to Prescribe (Prescriptive Authority).

What you need in order to apply:

  • Current, unrestricted licensure or certification as a Nurse Practitioner, and/or current practice as a Nurse Practitioner with Prescriptive Authority in another state

OR the following:

  • Current Virginia RN license or a current RN multistate licensure privilege (must meet this requirement to be eligible to reinstate a nurse practitioner license).
  • Current unrestricted Virginia Nurse Practitioner license (must meet this requirement to be eligible to reinstate a prescriptive authority license).
  • Current professional certification in the specialty area of practice issued by the appropriate certifying agency identified in 18 VAC 90-30-90
  • Completed continuing competency requirements indicated for Nurse Practitioner licensure renewal during the previous two years, in accordance with 18 VAC 90-30-105 and 18 VAC 90-40-55

OR (if applicable)

  • Current, unrestricted licensure or certification as a Nurse Practitioner and/or current practice as a Nurse Practitioner with Prescriptive Authority in another state
