1.  What is the Virginia Laws, Rules, and Regulations (LRR) exam?

The LRR exam is the Virginia state-specific examination required for licensure as a Funeral Service, Funeral Director, or Embalmer licensee. It tests your knowledge of current Virginia laws and regulations related to funeral service practice.

2.  Who needs to take the Virginia LRR exam?

The LRR exam is required for applicants seeking licensure as a Funeral Service Licensee, Funeral Director, or Embalmer in Virginia.

3.  When can I register for the LRR exam?

You may register once your licensure application has been received by the Virginia Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers, and your eligibility has been submitted to The International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards (ICFSEB or The Conference). You will be notified by email that your eligibility to test has been submitted to The Conference.

4.  How do I register for the LRR exam?

5.  How long should I expect to wait before scheduling the exam?

After submission, The Conference typically processes eligibility within 1-2 business days; then you may log in and complete your registration.

8.  What study materials should I use?

The LRR exam is based on current Virginia Laws and Regulations. Applicants may wish to review the following documents:

• Code of Virginia, Chapter 28. Funeral Services
• General Regulations Governing the Practice of Funeral Services
• Regulations for Preneed Funeral Planning
• Regulations for the Funeral Service Internship Program

The exam may also include information from the following:

• Virginia Department of Health (Agency 5) in Title 12 (Health) of the Virginia Administrative Code
• Virginia Department of Health - Regulations Governing Vital Records (Chapter 550)
• Virginia Board of Health Regulations Governing Vital Records - Procedures for Filing Death Certificates (Part X)

9.  Do I need to send anything to The Conference directly?

No, you only need to register and pay online; the Board transmits your eligibility directly to The Conference.

10. Is the LRR exam required for all Funeral Service licenses in Virginia?

Yes, all funeral‑service, funeral‑director, and embalmer license applicants must pass the LRR exam.

11. How often can I take the LRR? 

If you need to retake the exam, you must wait 30 days before attempting again to allow sufficient preparation time.
