Who We Are

The Virginia Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers consists of a 9-member Board, as well as administrative, enforcement, licensing, and support staff.

What We Do

We regulate the following professions: Funeral Service Licensees, Funeral Directors, Embalmers, Funeral Supervisors, Funeral Service Interns, Funeral Directing Interns, Embalmer Interns and Courtesy Card Holders.

In addition, we also regulate Funeral Establishments (Main and Branch), Crematories, Surface Transportation and Removal Services and Continuing Education Providers.

Mission

The mission of the Department of Health Professions is to ensure safe and competent patient care by licensing health professionals, enforcing standards of practice, and providing information to health care practitioners and the public.

Declinable Preneed Funeral Guarantee Fee – Emergency Regulations Live on June 15, 2026

The Emergency Regulations to implement the Declinable Preneed Funeral Guarantee Fee (Ch. 247, 2024 Acts of Assembly) became effective on June 15, 2026.
