Continuing Education FAQs

How many hours of continuing education are required to renew my license?

A total of thirty (30) hours of continuing education within the two years immediately preceding renewal, and at least 320 hours of active practice in the preceding four years, are required to renew your license. The breakdown of these hours is set forth in Regulation 18VAC112-20-131.

What continuing education courses are acceptable?

For a continuing education course to be approved by the Board, it must be related to the practice of Physical Therapy. The Board does not pre-approve continuing education courses. Please review 18VAC112-20-131 of the Board’s regulations for the continued competency requirements.

How long do licensees maintain their continuing education documentation?

Licensees should retain their records on the completed form with all supporting documentation for a period of four years following the renewal of an active license.

What are the requirements for an active duty extension of renewal?

A copy of Military Orders placing the licensee on active duty outside the United States is required for review of an extension of your renewal. An extension of your renewal may be granted for 60 days after your return to the United States. No late fee is charged. No extensions granted shall exceed five years from the date of the expiration.
