The Virginia Board of Physical Therapy (VBOPT) requires criminal background checks (CBCs), via the authority of Virginia Code Section 54.1-3484, to protect the public, especially the vulnerable populations that Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants serve.
Additionally, Virginia participates in the Physical Therapy Licensure Compact (Compact) that allows Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants to practice in Compact member states on a privilege authorized by the Physical Therapy Compact Commission. The Compact’s goal is to promote consistent standards among all member states with the implementation of CBCs for licensure.
Online applicants may view their Fieldprint Code and application status through their applicant checklist.
The Board makes licensure decisions based on applicants’ self-disclosed reports and, where necessary, the court records that are subsequently obtained. The criminal background check process is the mechanism to protect the public and ensures the Board is fully aware of an applicant’s criminal history before determining eligibility for a license.
All Physical Therapist (PT) and Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) applicants seeking initial licensure by examination and endorsement, are required to obtain a CBC.
No. CBCs are not required to renew your license.

No. CBC requirements do not apply to currently licensed PTs or PTAs in Virginia.
Yes. CBCs are required if a PT/PTA licensure application is submitted to the Board, including by endorsement from another state. Boards of Physical Therapy from other states do not share CBC information with each other.
