Where can training occur?

Traineeships are conducted in a facility that is approved by the Board and is served under the direction and supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist.

How many hours are required for a traineeship for a graduate of a non-approved program?

The Board requires 1,000 hours of continuous training for a traineeship for graduate of a non-approved program. See the previous question and answer for facility requirements.

How many trainees may a licensed PT supervise?

A Physical Therapist shall provide direct supervision to no more than three individual trainees at any one time.

What are the supervision requirements for a trainee?

A Physical Therapist must provide direct supervision to a trainee.

Direct supervision is when a Physical Therapist physically present, immediately available, and fully responsible for the physical therapy tasks or activities being performed.

Additional supervision requirements for trainees are as follows:

  1. No more than two physical therapists can be assigned to provide supervision for each trainee.
  2. The supervising physical therapist must countersign patient documentation (i.e., notes, records, charts) for services provided by a trainee.
  3. The trainee must wear identification designating them as a "physical therapist trainee" or a "physical therapist assistant trainee."

Note: A Physical Therapist is fully responsible for any action of individuals performing physical therapy functions under his/her supervision or direction.
