Healthcare Workforce Data Center

By 2020 there will be a projected shortage of 1500 physicians and 22,600 registered nurses in Virginia.
Currently in Virginia there is a lack of accurate healthcare data.
The area of direct support professionals (DSP) lacks the most data where there is a projected 45 % increase in demand by 2010.
from "Roadmap for Virginia's Health: A Report of the
Governor's Health Reform Commission", September 2007

History

The Governor’s Health Reform Commission Report dated September 2007 recommended the formation of the Healthcare Workforce Data Center to be located within the Department of Health Professions (DHP). In Spring 2008 Governor Kaine awarded a $275,000 Workforce Investment Act grant for fiscal year 2008-2009 for the development of the DHP Healthcare Workforce Data Center. Beverly Beck, RN, MBA, was hired in June 2008 to serve as Director of the project.

Purpose

To improve the healthcare system in the Commonwealth by improving data collection and measurement of the Commonwealth’s healthcare workforce through regular assessment of workforce supply and demand.

Objectives 2008-2009

The initial year of the project will focus on supply and demand issues related to physicians and nurses.

  • Goal #1: Establish the administrative structure of the DHP Healthcare Workforce Data Center (referenced as the “Center”) and include the Center on the Department of Health Professions’ (DHP) website by December 31, 2008.
  • Goal #2: Constitute the DHP Healthcare Workforce Advisory Council with the first meeting of the council held in fall 2008.
  • Goal #3: Determine the Department of Health Professions in-house research capabilities and select initial research partners as needed by December 31, 2008.
  • Goal #4: Revise current “minimum data sets” and begin collecting revised survey data by June 30, 2009.
  • Goal #5: Complete collection of survey supply data from educational institutions by June 30, 2009.
  • Goal #6: Collect demand information on physicians and nurses by June 30, 2009.
  • Goal #7: Evaluate research findings and determine the future direction of the DHP Healthcare Workforce Data Center with 2010-2012 goals and strategies by July 31, 2009.
  • Goal #8: Report research findings to the Secretary of Health and Human Resources, the Senior Advisor to the Governor for Workforce; and the Chancellor of the Virginia Community College System by July 31, 2009.
