Virginia Prescription Monitoring Program
Prescribers

In many states with existing prescription monitoring programs, prescribers are the primary users of the information in the database. The program should be used as a tool in determining whether an existing patient or a new patient may be obtaining the same or similar drugs from other prescribers. This information may help if there is a concern by the prescriber that a patient may be seeking prescription drugs for other than legitimate purposes.

As of May 13th, 2009, prescribers are no longer required to obtain individual written consent from their patients to receive a PMP Report. A written notice in a public area of your office staring that your practice may utilize the PMP program to obtain patient histories is sufficient. If you prefer, you may continue to obtain individual written consent for each patient.
