When will Virginia start requiring applicants to pass the Uniform Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (UMPJE)?
Plans are currently under development for transitioning from requiring applicants to successfully pass the Virginia MPJE to requiring applicants to successfully pass the Uniform MPJE. The Board will tentatively begin requiring applicants to pass the UMPJE in the fall of 2026. An announcement of the transition date will be made publicly at least 90-days in advance. Until such time, persons seeking pharmacist licensure must successfully pass the Virginia MPJE.
If a pharmacist applicant passes the UMPJE for licensure in another state before Virginia transitions to requiring the UMPJE, can that score be used for obtaining a pharmacist license in Virginia?
Yes, however, Virginia cannot issue a pharmacist license based on the UMPJE score until after Virginia transitions to requiring the UMPJE later this year. If the pharmacist applicant wants to obtain a Virginia pharmacist license prior to Virginia requiring the UMPJE, then the applicant must pass the Virginia MPJE.
