Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner (LSATP)-Applicants

A Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner (LSATP) is a person who, by education and experience, is:

  1. trained in and engages in the practice of substance abuse treatment with individuals or groups of individuals suffering from the effects of substance abuse or dependence, and in the prevention of substance abuse or dependence; and
  2. is licensed to provide advanced substance abuse treatment and independent, direct, and unsupervised treatment to such individuals or groups of individuals, and to plan, evaluate, supervise, and direct substance abuse treatment provided by others.

Supervised post-graduate degree experience is a prerequisite for licensure. You can apply to be a Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner by Examination by Endorsement. 

It is strongly recommended that you review the Regulations Governing the Practice of Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioners and the LSATP Licensure Process Handbook before submitting an application.

I have never held a LSATP license in any jurisdiction.     I have a graduate degree from a program that prepares individuals to practice substance abuse treatment or a counseling related discipline.     I have NOT completed:
  • 3,400 hours of supervised experience
  • 2,000 face-to-face hours of client contact
  • 200 hours of in-person supervision
I have NOT passed the Master Addiction Counselor (MAC) examination.  I want to complete post-graduate degree supervised experience towards LSATP licensure.

  • 3,400 hours of supervised experience
  • 2,000 face-to-face hours of client contact
  • 200 hours of in-person supervision

I hold a current and unrestricted mental health license and have active practice in substance abuse treatment, or hold a substance abuse treatment credential or certification, or hold a license that is substantially equivalent to the LSATP license in Virginia. 

I met my initial licensing jurisdiction’s education, supervised experience, and examination requirements for licensure.

I want to provide clinical substance abuse treatment services in Virginia.
