The Counseling Compact is an interstate compact, or a contract among states, allowing professional counselors licensed and residing in a compact member state to practice in other compact member states without the need for multiple licenses.
During the 2023 Legislative Session, HB1433/SB802 passed into law, making Virginia the 12th state to enact the Interstate Counseling Compact which was effective on January 1, 2024.
The Counseling Compact is not yet operational. The Compact Commission is currently in the process of developing the infrastructure for Compact states to begin offering privileges to practice in other Compact states, upon application to the Compact Commission for such privileges to practice. Once fully launched, the Counseling Compact will offer eligible clinically licensed professional counselors a new method for providing services in other member states.
