Additional Board of Pharmacy Emergency Waivers

Published on Oct 4, 2024

Pharmacy-related emergency provisions were communicated via email by the Virginia Department of Health, on behalf of the Virginia Board of Pharmacy, on September 28, 2024.  Due to extensive flooding in Virginia and neighboring states resulting in displaced individuals into and around Virginia, additional emergency waivers have been authorized.  First, the emergency provision for dispensing a drug in Schedules III-V has been broadened from allowing a "72-hour supply" to now allowing a "one-time refill" of the drug.  DEA's letter dated 10/3/2024 concurs with the emergency provisions authorized by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy for thirty days with the ability to extend such provisions, if necessary.  Secondly, a compounding allowance for hospital pharmacies to mitigate associated challenges in providing patient care has been authorized.
