The mission of the Department of Health Professions is to ensure safe and competent patient care by licensing health professionals, enforcing standards of practice, and providing information to health care practitioners and the public.
An Executive Branch agency in the Health and Human Resources Secretariat, DHP is composed of Virginia's 13 health regulatory boards, the Board of Health Professions, the Prescription Monitoring Program and the Health Practitioners' Monitoring Program. DHP licenses and regulates over 500,000 healthcare practitioners across 62 professions.

2024 National Nursing Workforce Survey
The Journal of Nursing Regulation released its signature report, the 2024 National Nursing Workforce Survey, which is a multi-state collaboration effort including contribution from DHP’s Healthcare Workforce Development Center staff. The report aligns closely with trends in Virginia’s nursing workforce.
Pharmacy Board and Colleagues Receive Award Recognition
In May, Caroline Juran, RPh, Executive Director of the Virginia Board of Pharmacy, received the 2024 Governor’s EMS Award for Innovation and statewide honors for her collaboration with the Emergency Medical Services community and the Drug Enforcement Administration to develop emergency regulations that ensured continued access to critical medications.
