Scam Alert

Published on Sep 19, 2025

The Board of Medicine is aware of the scam calls that are targeting physicians and other Board of Medicine licensees.  The executive director for the Board recently received such a call from the Board’s telephone number while in the office.   It was a scam caller claiming to be an investigator for the Board.  The Board of Medicine does not have any investigators.   All investigators work in the enforcement division of the Department of Health Professions (DHP).

Please know that an investigator will never contact you initially by phone.  It will either be by email or snail mail.  This should be reassuring to those who receive a scam call claiming to be from the board of medicine or DHP.

Please note that by law, Board staff is unable to confirm or deny that a complaint or investigation exists on a licensee.  So, the board cannot provide reassuring information to its licensees who call the Board asking for such information.

If you are not reassured by the bolded statement above, you may contact the DHP Enforcement Division at (804) 367-4691 who will be able to tell you if the individual who called you actually works for the Enforcement Division or not.
