Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Resident in Clinical Psychology

To expedite the processing of ONLINE applications for licensure or registration, applicants can now upload many of the required supporting documents required to apply for licensure or registration by using the new documents upload feature in the online application portal. In order to practice clinical psychology in Virginia, individuals are required to either a) hold a current active license as a clinical psychologist issued by the Virginia Board of Psychology, b) apply for and receive approval from the Board of Psychology to practice as a resident in psychology under appropriate supervision, c) meet one of the exemptions to licensure in § 54.1-3601 of the Code of Virginia or d) hold a current active PSYPACT credential (for limited practice).

What is the difference between the online application types?

Initial Registration of Residency toward Clinical Psychology Application. This application is for individuals who have completed the educational requirements in 18VAC125-20-54 but whose pre-doctoral practicum hours do not meet the requirements to fulfill all of the residency requirements or for those who want to provide clinical psychology services while preparing to sit for the EPPP examination.

Add/Change of Registration of Residency toward Clinical Psychology Application. This application is for individuals who previously received approval from the Board of Psychology for residency but need to change or add a supervisor.

Licensed Clinical Psychologist by Examination Application. This application is for individuals who have completed all of the education requirements in 18VAC125-20-54 and (one of the following):
• have completed doctoral practicum hours that satisfies residency requirements in 18VAC125-20-65 of the Regulations Governing the Practice of Psychology;
• have completed experience requirements as a board-approved Resident in Clinical Psychology; or
• have been approved as a resident in psychology and need approval to take the EPPP examination.

Licensed Clinical Psychologist by Endorsement Application. This application is for those individuals who hold an equivalent current independent clinical psychologist license in any jurisdiction in the United States or Canada.

All application fees are non-refundable. Please ensure that you are completing the correct application before moving forward with your payment.

Retain a copy of your application materials for your records. After one year, all incomplete application files will be destroyed as outlined in the Library of Virginia records retention and disposition schedules.
