The Virginia Board of Counseling consists of a 12-member Board, a Regulatory Board, an Advisory Board on Art Therapy, as well as administrative, enforcement, licensing, and support staff.
We license, certify or register: Certified Rehabilitation Providers, Certified Substance Abuse Counselors, Certified Substance Abuse Counseling Assistants, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, License Professional Counselors, Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioners, Qualified Mental Health Professionals, Registered Peer Recovery Specialists, Residents in Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy and Substance Abuse Treatment
Recent graduates, professionals licensed outside of Virginia, and those wanting to reinstate licenses.

The Department of Health Professions investigates complaints about Virginia healthcare practitioners who may have violated a regulation or law.

Special funding is available to help a total of 200 motivated Masters-prepared Counselors and Social Workers pursue Virginia licensure.

The Counseling Compact is an interstate compact, or a contract among states, allowing professional counselors licensed and residing in a compact member state to practice in other compact member states without the need for multiple licenses.
