Licensed Certified Midwife

Published on Jan 10, 2024

The regulations for a new profession – Licensed Certified Midwife (“LCM”) – will be effective on February 1st, 2024.  LCMs will be jointly regulated by the Committee of the Joint Boards of Nursing and Medicine pursuant to Virginia Code § 54.1-2957.04. LCMs are non-nurses who have a graduate degree in midwifery from an approved program and are certified as midwives by the American Midwifery Certification Board. They have prescriptive authority to prescribe Schedule II – VI drugs and must enter into a practice agreement with a licensed physician in order to practice. Initial and endorsement applications will be available online under Applicant Resources and the Board will begin officially receiving and processing applications and fees on Tuesday, February 20th, 2024.

The general email for LCM licensure and discipline is: lcm@dhp.virginia.gov.  Tamika Claiborne, Tamika.claiborne@dhp.virginia.gov, (804) 367-0279, will be the initial point of contact for internal and public inquiries.
