In accordance with Executive Order Number Thirty-Seven (2024) and the state of emergency issued by the Governor of Virginia on September 25, 2024 for those affected by Hurricane Helene, the Board of Nursing is authorized to grant a renewal extension upon request for licenses, certificates, and registrations expiring between September 25 and November 9, 2024. A licensee must be a resident of a jurisdiction affected by Hurricane Helene, including Grayson, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise and Wythe counties, and the City of Galax. To request a renewal extension, please email nursebd@dhp.virginia.gov and put “Renewal Extension Request” in the subject line.

Who We Are

The Virginia Board of Nursing consists of a 14-member Board, a 5-member Massage Therapy Advisory Board, as well as administrative, licensing, discipline, education, and support staff.

What We Do

We regulate Nurses (RN and LPN), Advanced Practice Registered Nurses including Nurse Anesthetists and Nurse Midwives, Nurse Aides, Advanced Certified Nurse Aides, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Medication Aides and Massage Therapists. We also regulate Prescriptive Authority for Nurse Practitioners. The Board also approves and regulates in-state education programs for Nurses (RN and LPN), Nurse Aides, and Medication Aides.
